August 2018 EXCAVATIONS
Following the success of our excavations earlier in 2018, we launched bigdig2 at the end of August. The work in May answered many of our questions about Thornton le Street, but there were other areas to explore.
We are starting to build up a picture of the kinds of activity that people were doing in the village, and also constantly refining the dates of occupation of the settlement.
The excavation ran Saturday 18th August – Sunday 26th August 2018. We welcomed old friends and new, and while many dug we also processed most of the 3400 finds comprising pottery, slag, bone & daub. The results from the summer dig should give a better understanding of this medieval village and we await the specialist reports with interest
Thank you to all who made the summer dig possible: landowners & Historic England for permissions, the HLF for funding, Solstice and our fantastic volunteers.
